Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign and European Integration Minister Andrei Stratan has expressed concern over "the inefficiency of the existing peacekeeping mechanism in Transdniestria" and spoke in favor of transforming it into "a multiethnic peacekeeping mission with an international mandate."

Stratan pointed to Russia's failure to honor the commitments it assumed at the Istanbul summit in 1999 at the 61st UN General Assembly session on Tuesday, the press service of the Moldovan Foreign Ministry told Interfax.

Stratan called for speeding up the withdrawal of Russian troops and weapons from Moldovan territory and organizing an international inspection at the ammunition depots in Transdniestria as soon as possible.

"The discussion of the problem of frozen conflicts at the UN will facilitate the settlement of conflicts in Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Moldova and will not undermine the existing mechanisms for settling such conflicts," he said.
