How can votes ever be officially legitimate in other's eyes if they dont recognize the country in the first place? I just dont see the point of statements like this, it's utterly childish and fruitless. It's like saying to the people, vote all you like, makes no difference, well still win either way so nyer nyer nyer... The kind of thing youd expect from children, not to mention it reflects an obvious underlying fearful belief that the votes will be in favour of Transdniestria and not in favour of it's opposition.

The article:

There is no country named Transdniester for the European Union

The Transdniester referendum has no official status, ballot boxes can be placed anywhere, but this would not add any legitimacy to the voting process, declared Emma Udwin, the spokesperson of the European Commission for External Relations, for the Russian newspaper "Nezavisimaya Gazeta", while expressing the position of the European Community. "The European Union does not recognize the self-declared formation that calls itself the Transdniester Moldovan Republic. OSCE clearly formulated its position - this referendum is illegitimate. Respectively, the EU also does not recognize the results of this referendum. ", - declared Emma Udwin.

The European Union believes that the comparison between this situation and that of the Montenegro, which recently became independent, is inappropriate.

"The separation of Serbia and Montenegro was carried out according to an agreement between both sides. The situation is totally different in Transdniester, which is not recognized by any international body as a formation, independent of Moldova. There is also no agreement between Chisinau and Tiraspol on the September referendum."

The EU believes that "the best scenario for the people living in Transdniester, is to be integrated in the state they live in. And that country is Moldova", declared Emma Udwin, the spokesperson of the European Commission for External Relations and European Neighborhood Policy.
