The opening of a EU Border Assistance Mission at the Moldova-Ukraine state border can block smuggling and corruption in Transdniestria.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Iurii Ehanurov has made this statement during the meeting with Senior EU Foreign Policy Representative Javier Solana in Brussels.
Ehanurov said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Boris Tarasiuc, Moldovan Foreign Minister Andrei Stratan, and EU Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighborhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner are signing today the Memorandum on the European Commission Border Assistance Mission.

The signature of this agreement will give the possibility to join the efforts made by the US, EU, Ukraine, and Russia and will put an end to smuggling and corruption in Transdniestria, Ehanurov said.

The sides have also discussed issues concerning the implementation of the plan for the settlement of the Transdniestrian dispute, as well as Ukraine and EU participation in this process.

Yushchenkos plan is very constructive. Your Russian friends have modified it a little and we hope the problem will be solved,? Solana said.

Russias proposals on the settlement of the Transdniestrian conflict will be examined on October 27, 2005 in the 5+2? format. The so-called Transdniestrian Foreign Minister Valeri Litcai was cited by Olvia-press? as saying that Russias plan is a serious and well thought document which was drawn up as a result of four-month consultations with all the sides, including Tiraspol?. According to Litcai, the document includes about 75 percent of the Kozak plan and about 15 percent of the Yushchenko plan. Litcai said this plan entirely contradicts all Moldovas documents on Transdniestria?. Earlier, Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin declared that Chisinau officials will negotiate with Tiraspol the settlement of the Transdniestrian conflict only on the basis of the documents issued by the Parliament last summer.
