After a long absence, the breakaway Moldovan region of Transnistria was once again on the European Parliament's agenda today.

MEPs are apparently once again concerned for the region, which declared independence in 1992 after an armed conflict involving Russian military support. The government in Tiraspol, the capital of the breakaway region, plans to hold a referendum on independence on 17 September. "This referendum is both provocative and illegitimate. The region has no international recognition and the referendum is therefore illegal," said Estonian MEP Marianne Mikko.

Mikko chairs the European Parliament's delegation to Moldova. "We want EU pressure stepped up so that negotiations, which broke down indefinitely in April, when the Transnistrians walked away from the table, can resume," added Mikko.

MEPs have long called on the Russian Federation to end its support for the Transnistrian regime. "Russia must fulfil its commitments by withdrawing troops unconditionally," they said, "including their heavy weaponry and munitions," said Mikko, together with Socialist Group Vice-President Jan Marinus Wiersma, who is responsible for policy on the wider Europe.
