The method of solving the Kosovo problem will be the precedent for Transdniestria, Igor Smirnov, the president of this breakaway republic of Moldova, told reporters December 27. According to Smirnov, Transdniestria has more grounds than Kosovo for being recognized an independent state.

In legal terms, Smirnov said, the so-called Transdniestrian Moldova's Republic has all criteria of an independent state. And in Transdniestria, they are willing to implement results of September 17, 2006 referendum, whereby the absolute majority of region's residents supported independence and integration with Russia.

Tiraspol, the unrecognized president went on, will resume the talks with Chisinau provided these will be the equal negotiations and Moldova will drop the practice of political and economic pressurizing. According to Smirnov, they should revive previously sealed agreements, including the memorandum of 1997, which allows Transdniestria to conduct independent economic activities overseas.

Today's Moldova isn't capable of carrying on the political dialogue, Smirnov pointed out, explaining that Tiraspol had received no plans from Chisinau aimed at nearing the parties' positions.
