The chairman-in-office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Karel de Gucht, has urged Moldova and its breakaway Transdniestria region to resume talks to settle their conflict.

De Gucht, who is Belgian foreign minister, also called on Transdniestria to remain part of Moldova, but insisted that the region be given a special status within Moldova.

De Gucht, who was speaking at a news conference in Chisinau during a two-day visit to Moldova, called on Transdniestria to abandon what he qualified as a policy of self-isolation and for it accept new rules for the movement of goods across the Moldovan-Ukrainian border.
