Chisinau must continue claiming for unconditional withdrawal of Russian troops from the Transdnestr territory, despite the fact that Russia suspended the CFE Treaty, Director of the Chisinau Institute for Social Policies Viorel Cibotaru told Flux newspaper (Moldova) today.
The expert said that the decision of the Russian president on the issue would most of all affect Moldova and first of all in what the Transdnestr conflict settlement is concerned.
"The situation brings to naught a possibility of democratization of the Dniester left bank, reforming the Tiraspol regime and reintegrating the Republic of Moldova. We are now in the condition when the conflict settlement process is practically frozen. Suspension of the CFE Treaty does not change the situation for Moldova radically, but it will have significant consequences in a more long-term perspective," the analyst said.
As REGNUM reported earlier, the decree to suspend the CFE Treaty was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 14. According to the decree, the decision was caused by exclusive circumstances regarding the contents of the CFE Treaty of November 19, 1990 that concern Russia's security and claim for immediate measures." Earlier, in May, Moscow imposed moratorium on the treaty until it is ratified by all NATO member-countries.
