Moldovo has asked for discussions to continue concerning the Transdniestrian conflict in the 5+2 format as soon as possible.
The body reponsible for the Transdniestrian settlement, The Moldovan Ministry of Reintegration, stated on Monday that at the March 27-28 talks the mediators and observers had been invited to meet for another round on March 7.
The 5+2 talks (Moldova, Transdniestria, Russia, Ukraine, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, as well as the United States and the European Union as observers) were suspended on February 28 after the Moldovan delegation had walked out over Tiraspol??s intractability.
On March 3, Ukraine introduced new customs regulations, under which all Transdniestrian goods have to be customs cleared by Moldova. Tiraspol said it was an economic blockade.
The foreign minister of the unrecognised republic, Valery Litskai, said an additional round of talks on April 4 would be impossible ?under economic pressure on Transdniestria from Moldova and Ukraine.
The head of the OSCE permanent mission in Moldova, William Hill, called for a resumption of talks. He spoke of Chisinau??s and Tiraspol??s reluctance to resolve disputable issues of both Transdniestrian settlement and customs conflict, which is the main impediment at the talks.
