Security forces fielded by the unrecognised country Transnistria arrested two Moldovan police officers, the Infotag news agency reported Tuesday. Russian-speaking Transnistria gain de-facto independence from Romanian-speaking Moldova after a civil war ending in 1992. Security forces from both sides patrol a ceasefire zone dividing the former combatants. Transnistrian para-military police based in the city Bender arrested a pair of Moldovan police officers on the way to work without grounds, and have yet to release them, said Ion Liakhu, Moldovan representative to the Joint Council (JC) monitoring the ceasefire zone. "This is just another provocation by Tiraspol," Liakhu charged. The Moldovan government believes the two officers to be held in a Bender jail, he said. There was no immediate comment on the incident from Transnistria's authoritarian government. Bender is one of the largest cities in the ceasefire zone, and was the focus of fighting killing hundreds on 1991 and 1992. Police from both sides on Friday reportedly came close to opening fire when a Transnistrian and Moldovan patrol encountered each other on the Dubossary-Rybnitsia highway. The dispute centred on whether Transnistrian or Moldovan police should monitor traffic moving on the highway. Officials from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe on the scene defused the conflict. Fruitless talks on returning Transnistria to Moldovan sovereignty have been in progress since 1994. ? 2007 DPA
