Moldova and Ukraine will intensify their cooperation, including on Transdniestria settlement, according to an agreement reached by Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin and Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko at their meeting at the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) forum in Istanbul on Monday.

Voronin confirmed Moldova's interest in the resumption of the talks on Transdniestrian settlement at the earliest opportunity in the five plus two format (Moldova, Transdniestria, Russia, Ukraine, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and observers from the United States and the European Union).

He noted the important role of Ukraine in the resolution of the Transdniestria conflict and recalled appropriate initiatives put forth by Yushchenko.

The presidents also agreed to hold a meeting of the inter-governmental commission on July 15 to be followed by their new personal meeting.

"We believe that a meeting of the inter-governmental commission will be held in July and we will be able to schedule a top-level meeting at the end of August of the beginning of September to formalise these issues," Yushchenko said.

He plans to make an official visit to Chisinau.

The two countries also plan to step up humanitarian and energy cooperation and joint work on the demarcation and delimitation of the border.
