"Moldova is a constituent part of Europe and it is worth being backed on its path to democratic reforms", the Council of Europe's co-rapporteurs for Moldova, Josette Durrieu and Egidijus Vareikis, said on 1 October during a Strasbourg meeting with Moldovan Parliament Speaker Marian Lupu.

The officials hailed the progress Moldova has made to ensure political and economic changes, and highlighted the importance for the Moldovan authorities to press ahead with the democratic reforms and to undertake concrete efforts in this respect.

Lupu thanked the two co-rapporteurs for the draft report on the way Moldova has been honouring its commitments undertaken towards the Council of Europe and underlined that the draft adequately and objectively points out both Moldova s advancement as well as the sectors still needing improvement.

For her part, Josette Durrieu said that Europe displays deep sympathy for Moldova and that Moldova deserves the European Community s entire attention and support for the implementation of reforms.

We have ascertained significant progress and reforms, but at the same time, Moldova has to continue the reforms in the same tempo and solve all the problems it still confronts with, she said. Durrieu specified that Transnistria is one of Moldova's most serious problems, and highlighted that it poses serious impediments, including economic, to Moldova's development.

Ejidijus Vareikis said that over the last years, Moldova participated more actively in regional activities and displayed its interests in the south eastern region more consistently. According to Vareikis, Moldova gradually manages to strengthen its active position in this region.

Referring to the draft report for Moldova, Vareikis said the document is the most positive one out of all the others that have been worked out so far. Vareikis also said that the possibility for Moldova to shift from the monitoring to the post monitoring stage can be examined provided that our country continues registering progresses.

Also on 1 October, Lupu met the leader of the Socialist Group of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Luis Maria del Puig, and the leader of the PACE European Popular Party Group, Luc Van den Brande.

Moldovan Parliament Speaker Marian Lupu participates in the PACE autumn session in Strasbourg, France, on 1-5 October.
