Transdniestria??s largest industrial enterprise, the Moldovan Metallurgy Works (MMZ), is coming to a halt because of the new customs regulations imposed by neighbouring Ukraine. ?MMZ has already lost 22 million U.S. dollars from the economic blockade and has decided to stop operation, Transdniestrian Economics Minister Yelena Chernenko told journalists on Monday. She said 13 enterprises had already stopped operation in the breakaway region of Moldova. ?Over 35 days of the blockade the total damage sustained by Transdniestria has reached 89 million U.S. dollars. ?? If isolation continues for another month, it may have the worst possible consequences for the life of the region, the minister said. On March 3 Ukraine introduced new customs regulations, according to which all Transdniestrian goods have to be customs cleared by Moldova. Transdniestria called it an economic blockade. In turn, Chisinau accused Tiraspol of ?self-blockade. The Russian Foreign Ministry described the situation ?as another attempt to put economic pressure on Tiraspol for forcing it into political capitulation and said it feared that the region ?may be plunged into a humanitarian catastrophe. But Moldova disagrees with the Russian Foreign Ministry??s opinion of the Ukrainian customs rules. Moldovan Reintegration Ministry, which is in charge of the Transdniestria settlement, said, ?The customs rules fully meet international legal norms and create additional prerequisites for the Transdniestria settlement. On the other hand, it welcomed the Russian Foreign Ministry appeal for resolving problems through negotiations on a guaranteed status for Transdniestria. ?The April 3 and 4 statements by the Reintegration Ministry called for the resumption of the negotiations. In this light, the implementation of the plan suggested by Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko stipulates the creation of appropriate conditions through democratisation and demilitarisation of the Moldovan Transdniestrian region as an important element of the definition of the Transdniestria status at political negotiations, the ministry runs. The Transdniestria settlement negotiations in the 5+2 format were upset on February 28 after the Moldovan delegation blamed the Dniester authorities for stubbornness and left the negotiations. But Transdniestrian Foreign Minister Valery Litskai said it was impossible to hold a new round of talks on April 4 because of the Moldovan and Ukrainian economic pressure on the region. ?Attempts to force the capitulation on one of the parties contradict fundamental principles of the OSCE, the Russian Foreign Ministry told Moldovan Ambassador in Moscow Vasile Sturza. www.itar-tass.com
