The U.S. hopes Moscow and Tbilisi will find a compromise on the withdrawal of Russian military bases from Georgia in the near future. "Russia's latest proposal on the timing of withdrawal from Georgia, by all accounts, moves Russia's position much closer to that of Georgia, and is clearly a step in the right direction," U.S. Ambassador to Russia Alexander Vershbow said in an interview with Interfax. The ambassador confirmed the U.S. will continue to tie implementation of the adapted Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) Treaty to Russia's withdrawal of all its military personnel and hardware from Georgia and Moldova (Transdniestria). "The United States and many other parties to the Treaty have made it clear that we cannot move forward on ratification of the Adapted CFE Treaty until the commitments made at the Istanbul summit regarding Georgia and Moldova are fulfilled," Vershbow said.
