The phrase “two states – one nation” that was recently stated by the Romanian President Traian Basescu is not accepted by Chisinau, President Vladimir Voronin said during the program “In Depth” broadcast by PRO TV Chisinau on Tuesday.

The chief of the Moldovan state told he does not agree with the syntagm “two states – one nation” because there are two states that follow the path of European integration, there are Moldovans and Romanians. Voronin mentioned the results of the last population’s census according to which the Moldovans are the majority ethnicity in Moldova.

Voronin said it would be better to leave the issues related to the language and history aside and concentrate on the process of European integration.

The President said he approves of the signature of the Basic Treaty with Romania but it must reflect the relations of the two states in compliance with the principles of the European Union and not be a document signed between “the elder brother” and “the smaller brother”.

Vladimir Voronin expressed indignation at the way the mass media interpreted the declaration he made while the Russian Patriarch Alexy II was on a visit to Chisinau as concerns the fact that the Bessarabian Metropolitan Church is not registered. The chief of state vehemently denied that he had said this thing.

“The Bessarabian Metropolitan Church is registered. I know very well we were compelled by the European Court of Human Rights to register it. Yes, it exists unfortunately. Why should there be two Metropolitan Churches for one faith?/…/ The existence of the Bessarabian Metropolitan Church has a political connotation, while the Moldovan Metropolitan Church is the traditional church that exists for hundreds of years,” Vladimir Voronin told.

The chief of state has also denied the allegations according to which he would have asked the Patriarch Alexy II to mediate a meeting with the Russian President Vladimir Putin, specifying that all the conversations and meetings with his Russian counterpart are agreed on directly or are organized by the presidential staff.

Speaking of the Transdniestrian conflict, Vladimir Voronin said they will accept only the documents that comply with the law on the fundamentals of Transdniestria’s status. At the same time he confirmed that he possesses documents from Saddam Hussein’s office which prove that Tiraspol acted as intermediary in the sale of armament and lines of armament production to Iraq. // Reporter.MD
